Chapter 11

“Who?” I asked as I grabbed onto the doorframe of the kitchen. Mindy, Mom, and Aunt Shirley were already in the kitchen. I could hear the men talking in the front room.

Paige wedged her body next to mine in the doorway.

Mindy handed Paige and me a glass of hot herbal tea. I took it out of habit.

“Who?” I demanded again.

Mom met my eyes. “Your neighbor, Miss Mabel.”

The cup slipped from my grasp and fell onto the floor with a loud crash. I looked down at the fallen cup. Luckily it hadn’t shattered, just spilled.

“I’ll get it,” Mindy said quickly. “You go sit down at the table.”

I bit my lower lip to keep from crying as I stumbled to the diminutive table Mom kept in the kitchen for quick meals. For more formal dinners we ate in the dining room.

“How?” I asked.

Mom and Aunt Shirley came over to the table and sat on each side of me.

“She must have seen Waylon’s car in the drive and thought we were all home,” Aunt Shirley said. “When we didn’t answer, she probably went to go get the key you left her and let herself in your house. There was a wedding gift next to her body.”

I looked at her in confusion. Then shook my head. “No. I mean how did she die?” My words came out in a sob.

Aunt Shirley looked at Mom before answering. “Quickly. You could tell Danner was enraged.”

I could hear Paige crying softly behind me.

“That’s one good thing,” Mom said as she stroked my arm.

“Yes,” Aunt Shirley agreed. “He was so angry he didn’t think to torture her or prolong her death. He just ended her life quickly.”

“Did he leave a note?” I asked. “He’s been leaving notes.”

Aunt Shirley and Mom exchanged looked.

“What?” I said. “Just tell me.”

“He left me a note,” Aunt Shirley said. “It basically said he was done playing games and someone I love will die within the next forty-eight hours. And then it will be my turn.”

Paige let out a sob and covered her mouth with her hands.

“At least this should prove to Los Angeles that it’s Danner,” I said, trying to ignore my sorrow and rapid heartbeat.

“I don’t think it matters anymore,” Aunt Shirley said. “Garrett is done messing with California. We’re on our own, and we will make sure Danner is captured before he can make good on his promise.”

I laid my head down on my arms and wept for Miss Mabel. She was a sweet old lady that constantly watched out for me. When I lived in town, she would slip into my house and leave me cookies or some of her left-over dinner. Mabel was a kind and generous woman.

And now she was dead.

Rage flooded my body, and I wanted nothing more than to beat Danner within an inch of his life. How dare he think he had the right to come into my town on my wedding day and kill my friends. That psycho was going down and going
